Does the DL7400 need DisplayLink on Mac?
Yes.
This is not a native-only Thunderbolt multi-display configuration. The DL7400 uses DisplayLink technology for its multi-display functionality.
On macOS, DisplayLink Manager needs to be installed and running. macOS also requires Screen Recording permission for DisplayLink screen casting.

Anker notes that reaching the maximum 140W output requires a host that supports PD 3.1 and that no more than one device should be connected to the front USB-C charging ports.

Is DisplayLink a downside?
It depends on what you want from the setup.
DisplayLink is useful because it allows the DL7400 to provide a predictable multi-monitor configuration over its USB connection, including on MacBooks.
The tradeoff is that the setup depends on software. DisplayLink Manager must be running for full multi-display operation, and macOS requires Screen Recording permission.
